I'll keep it short and sweet this week since I'll be posting Week 7 in a few more days. Full Week of WorkoutsI worked and played hard during Week 6. I also tried watercoloring Fall foliage. It was super soothing, but I need more practice. (I think a similar card I made for my brother's birthday looks much better, but I can't show you that one.) Fall is Pie Season, Right?Fun Fact: A long time ago, my friends and I ran a Bake Sale every Fall for 10 years as a fundraiser for our kids' grade school. Since then, when Fall weather arrives my brain is triggered to pull out baking recipes. This year, I found this interesting take on Apple Pie that I want to try. So, I made a watercolor recipe page. Pro tip on apple pie baking — use Granny Smith apples. Yep, I know the apple I painted below is red, but use green Granny Smith in your pie. They taste delicious and don't get too mushy. My New Favorite Buff® HeadwearIf you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, you've already seen my new Buff® Ecostretch. Hands down this one is my favorite color scheme. I love that it's so versatile — it wicks away sweat one day, and keeps me warm another. It's perfect for any activity this time of year! Now for my watercolor review: the background (pseudo tabletop) watercolor wash stinks. But, somehow, the Buff® saves the page. Are Fall Colors Ironic in Florida?I'll readily admit I miss the kind of Fall scenery you find "up north" but I absolutely LOVE Fall in Florida. Although we don't have colorful corn in St. Pete, I enjoyed painting it in watercolor. Corn husks can be so graceful, sometimes. Weekly Mileage Reached 25.78Do you round up your workout miles? I know some runners will loop the block to end their workout on an even number — like 7, instead of 6.95. I don't feel the need, but that's just me. I was very happy with my workouts during Week 6. I really enjoyed my Sunday long run. It's Starting to Snow, Man

There were 3 holidays to sketch and paint: National Pumpkin Day, National Chocolate Day and Halloween. Keep reading to see my painting and running progress. Week 5: How It Started
Week 5: How It EndedI managed to get in most of my miles this week. Sunday's long run was a little short, but overall I'm happy with my workouts. I'm still following my training program. It feels like I'm gaining strength and endurance. As far as my watercolors — I really enjoyed the sketches and painting this week. My sketches get the ideas across, but I'm hopeful for more improvement. I'd love to get the perspective right more often. I keep reminding myself that just like running, artwork is a process. I love watercolors as much as I love running. They're both peaceful, zen-like activities for me. I can't think of anything better than listening to music and getting lost in these endeavors. Hot Chocolate 15K + National Chocolate DayNational Chocolate Day and a Hot Chocolate 15K are best friends! You'll find most of these chocolate goodies when you run a Hot Chocolate 15K or 5K. Honestly, #HC15K hot chocolate is the best (BEST) I've ever tasted. You can sample hot chocolate at the expo before the race, and the finish line after the race. You also get chocolate, marshmallows and fondue in your finishers cup. Yum! Pennsylvania Pumpkin PatchI finished off the week with a rusty truck in a pumpkin patch. I think this sketch could be a lot better — but it's a start, and a great memory from last October. The rusty spots turned out okay, but my perspective needs work. Overall, I'm happy with my sketchbook training journal. It's a fun challenge and an effective way to track my progress for the Hot Chocolate 15K on December 19. Just 7 weeks until race day! Next up — NOVEMBER and more intense race training! Hot Chocolate Tampa Prices Increase on November 7

I finished the week with a 9.4 mile run on Sunday. It was hard, but incredibly satisfying. The training program I'm using is kind to my old runner body, but after 4 weeks things are getting serious. TBH, I'm loving the workouts. The humidity returned at the end of the week, but that's okay. The UV rays are down and Sunday was overcast. I love running on overcast days — almost as much as rainy days. On the watercolor front, I focused on vignettes I see on my runs: a butterfly garden on a median, spooky creatures, and a lovely Secret Garden door in an alley. I feel like my sketches are looser this week — which is good. I love how relaxing the sketching and painting is. I get lost in the painting. So. Much. Fun. Onward we go with more miles and sketchbooking. Keep scrolling if you'd like to see how my Week 4 pages look. How Week 4 Sketching StartedHalloween season has been a big help for my sketch inspirations. This week, I practiced light washes. I enjoyed figuring out how to paint a hairy spider, too. I'm enjoying the parallel progress of working on my running and painting. Week 4 Ended with 24.41 MilesRoadside Butterfly GardenI'm an avid butterfly gardener. I'm also a butterfly garden appreciator. I always admire and enjoy the plants and care a local homeowner extends to the public property next to the road. Right now everyone gets to enjoy vibrant orange daisies and fluttering monarchs. (The pumpkin bucket represents the hundreds of pumpkins hanging from all the trees right now.) Creepy CreaturesThe inflatables are everywhere this week. Saturday night was the Haunted Hike in our hood, so we got to see all the creatures lit up in the dark. It was fun. I painted this guy because he's always fully inflated. I have no idea who or what he is, but he's on the job day and night. There are purple flashing lights at night. The Secret Garden Door in the AlleyThis door is in an alley where I sometimes run. I often forget which one. But, I'm so happy to see it each time I find it again. I imagine there is a beautiful secret garden on the other side of the door and wall. It's one of the prettiest alley entrances I've seen. This quick sketch doesn't do it justice; it does remind me how much I like it. I wish all alley barriers were this nice. Weekly Mileage and Shoe TrackerThis week's mileage came in at 24.41. I have 91+ miles logged on my two pairs of Puma Deviate Nitros. Time for a Rest Day on Monday! Register and Run the Tampa Hot Chocolate 15K / 5KDon't forget! Week three of training for the Hot Chocolate 15K/5K in Tampa on Dec. 19 flew by! The countdown continues with running and sketching. This week I was obsessed with fall colors. I had so much fun painting foliage, that I'm sure I'll do it again. The spooky creatures continue to multiply — this week should be super scary since my neighborhood hosts a Haunted Hike this coming weekend. Cooler temps, lower humidity and spooky decorations, are making running so much fun. Take a peek below for this week's sketches and mileage counts. Happy running, everyone! I’m combining two goals into one project: My Tampa Hot Chocolate 15K Training Log and a watercolor sketchbook. It’s my version of a Bullet Journal plus a Training Journal. I feel like switching from digital to paper tracking may help me focus. I still feel like I have a hangover from 2020 and the racing season that wasn't. My goals for this training cycle are consistency, engagement, improvement and enjoyment in running and watercoloring. I think it will be fun to visually track my progress in both areas. Hopefully, at the end of 12 weeks both my running and watercolor abilities improve! Sketchbook Material and Color Palette
Hot Chocolate 15K Training Journal Front CoverIt was easy to decide on the front cover art. Hot Chocolate, of course! I added a title and note about the training period. The Hot Chocolate 15K/5K has one of the best cocoas I've ever had. You can judge for yourself by taste-testing at the race expo, or after you cross the finish line. I'm using Windsor & Newton Cotman (student grade) watercolors along with a fun metallic palette I bought on Amazon. But, I think any watercolors will work for a training sketchbook. Race and Watercolor GoalsI have two goals: Race the Hot Chocolate 15K in Tampa on December 12, 2021 and Practice Watercolors. The sketchbook will illustrate my progress. I included a shoe tracker on this page. I want to see how many miles I put on the shoes I wear during the training cycle. I'll run in Puma Deviate Nitros; a Pink pair and a Lava Blast pair. I tested the Pumas as a BibRave Pro, and fell in love with them. (You can read my Puma review here.) These are my second and third pair of Deviate Nitros. Weekly Mileage LogI decided to add a couple of pages that show my training mileage by the week. This gives me an easy way to see weekly totals and progress without flipping through the whole sketchbook. Week One of TrainingEach week gets at least one page. This gives me room to sketch and watercolor things I see or do during that week. Week One is all about the pumpkins appearing all over the neighborhood. Everyone is excited to welcome Fall and Halloween this year. My watercolor skills are novice, for sure. Working out the page layout was fun. I like recording my mileage and thoughts in this format. I'm already thinking about next week's page. Here's where I am after one week on my sketchbook training journal. I'm feeling ready and motivated! Now, on to Week Two. Spooky Season Sketch Add On(Oct 3.) I had to add the spider web house to my Sunday run page for Week One. #SpookySzn Find links to my other #HC15K sketchbook pages here.
