Review of Athlinks: The Perfect Place for Tracking Your Race Results

5/22/2018

Largest Database of Results for Athletes

If you've crossed the finish line of a race your results are probably on Athlinks.

That's because Athlinks is the world's largest database of
 results for athletes.

Results include running races, triathlon, swimming, cycling, mountain biking obstacle course races, and nearly any other timed endurance sport. If the results are available, Athlinks adds them to the database so you can link them to your account.

Instead of scribbling your results on the back of a bib, you can have them in a searchable database that lets you track your progress, plan your races, and compete with rivals. Keep reading! There's a lot more to Athlinks.
Sign in screen for Athlinks
You can sign up for a FREE Athlinks account with email, Facebook or Google.

Disclaimer: I'm writing this review of Athlinks as part of being a BibRavePro.

Use Athlinks to Track Your Progress

Athlink uses information from race directors and athlete communities to fill the database. When results are posted online, the Race Director sends files and/or links to the Athlinks team. Athlinks uploads the information to the website and database.
I had 30+ races done when I opened my free account. It was fun to create my profile, then link to all my races. It didn't take long to assemble all my stats on Athlinks. Now, I see my progress all in one place. While I'm not the fastest runner, progress keeps me motivated.

Athlinks gives you a few ways to view your race results:
  • Overview
You'll see your upcoming events, as well as your friends' races.
  • Results
Results includes every completed event in chronological order. You can scroll through your entire race history!
  • Following
The Following tab gives you a searchable list of fellow runners who you're connected with on Athlinks.
  • Rivals
Want to see how you stack up? The Rivals tab shows how you finished in races compared to friends in the same race.
  • Statistics = Personal Records
The Statistics view shows your personal records. You'll see your best efforts for each type of race.

Feeling competitive? Click the Rivals tab (shown below) to see how you compare to other runners. If you run the same race as someone you follow, Athlinks keeps tabs on who beats who.

Plan Your Race Schedule with Athlinks

Whether you're already registered, or looking for your next race, Athlinks is an impressive planning tool. Use it to view upcoming races so you can plan for training and recovery.

To find a new race, enter an event name, date range, location, and/or type of event. Hit search and Athlinks will show your results. Below are results from searching for races near Tampa, Florida between May and December, 2018.
List of upcoming events near Tampa.
As you can see, there are clickable links for previous years. Use those to see stats on the race. You can search results, see the number of participants, winning times, weather, etc. You'll find a lot of useful info. BTW, there were more results than I'm showing here.

Free Training Plans and Advice

Yep, there's more than statistics. Athlinks has resources for endurance athetes. You'll find advice on training, gear, and nutrition. Visit the Athlinks Blog for details.

Featured Events and Destination Races

Have your eye on a special race? You'll find plenty of featured events and destination races on Athlinks.com. There are descriptions of racecations for foodies, special attractions, charities, and landmarks. FYI, I want to run the Pittsburgh Half Marathon next May.
Featured race article on Athlinks.com.
You'll also find articles on gear, coaching, the best races for first-timers, races for people who like to party, and more.

There's An Athlinks Mobile App

Take Athlinks with you using the mobile app. You can stay up-to-date with race details using the official event feed.

Share your race with family and friends. The mobile app has animated maps that predict your location during an event.
Your peeps can track you on course. It's perfect for meeting up during and after the race.

Join the Athlinks Community!

Go ahead and follow me on Athlinks. You probably run faster than I do, and that's okay. I'm just here to make you look good! You're welcome.

Never Been to Miami? Try a 305 Half Marathon & 5K Race-cation

2/6/2018

What do you think of when someone says Miami? Maybe it's beaches, sunshine, celebrities or excellent food. (Maybe it's all of those things!) But, did you know it's a popular race-cation destination?

And why not? It never snows in Miami. And the sights and sounds are excellent! There's everything from alligators in Everglades National Park to historic architecture in the Art Deco District. It's a fascinating area.

The 305 Half Marathon and 5K (formerly 13.1 Miami Beach) is perfect for a running vacation. This year the races are on March 4th. Let's take a look at the race course.

Tour the City While You #RunMiami

Course map for the 305 Half Marathon in Miami, Florida.
The 305 Half Marathon begins and ends on historic Ocean Drive in South Beach. I love South Beach. It's beautiful to look at, plus you can find the most delicious food!

The race begins on the beach with views of the water and all the restaurants on Ocean Drive. Ahh, I can feel those balmy ocean breezes now.

Running through the city.
The race course moves north from South Beach through town. Many buildings have a fun art deco vibe. You'll have a street-level view of some beautiful homes. You'll see the lush green Miami Beach Golf Course on your way to the bridge.

It's All Foot Traffic on the Causeway

On the Julia Tuttle Causeway there will be beautiful blue water on either side of you. Running across the bridge is fun without cars! I don't know about you, but I always enjoy running where I can't on a normal day.

Wynwood Walls and Doors

After exiting the causeway, runners head south on 2nd Ave NE for a couple of miles. This part of the course takes you past the Wynwood neighborhood.

It's a converted warehouse district known for graffiti, funky galleries, breweries, bistros and bars. It's an outdoor mural museum! Make a plan to spend time here before or after your race. It will recharge your creative juices.

Biscayne Bay, Fisher Island

Next, you'll run away from Miami — back across the water on the Macarthur Causeway. You'll see giant cruise ships in the port. On the north side of the causeway is Palm Island. You'll exit the causeway and follow the paved South Point Park Bayway along Biscayne Bay with views of Fisher Island.

South Beach, Lummus Park

The course turns north, then takes a jog onto Ocean Drive for the last mile. The finish line is in Lummus Park on South Beach. Did I mention that I love South Beach? There you'll receive your medal and enjoy a post-race beach party.

305 Half Marathon and 5K Race Amenities

There are a lot of amenities and perks built into this event! First, there's the weather! The average temperature in Miami during March is 74 degrees.

When you register for 305 Half Marathon and 5K you'll receive a tech shirt, beautiful medal, and a fully supported raced course. (There are 11 aid stations for the half marathon.)

Here's everything you get when you run:
  • 305-inspired finisher medal
  • Technical performance race shirt
  • Oceanside course views
  • A Miami-only experience
  • Professional timing and live results messaging
  • Free race photos compliments of Athlinks
  • Post-race beach party (must be 21 with a valid ID)
  • Top finishers awards

To Recap: Register. Run. Race-cation!

Montage of Miami Beach
The views and vibe are awesome in the 305! During the race you'll see the city in a new way. After the race there's so much more to see and do.

Miami and Miami Beach offer more than beautiful beaches. Botanical Gardens. Art Galleries. Fine Food. Museums. Street Art. Music. Little Havana. Little Haiti. Sightseeing Cruises.

Check out this list of the ten best things to do in Miami.

I Loved My Best Damn Races

Picture of three Best Damn Race finisher medals.

The Safety Harbor edition of the #BestDamnRace was great fun! This was my second-ever attempt at running a Challenge — a 10K and 5K race one after another. The first challenge was in January, so why not try another in February?

I'll write a full review later — I have lots of good things to report about the race. (Big bling, organized, wonderful race atmosphere, support and party, etc.) Until then, take a peek at a few photos below.

Race day packet pick up was available starting at 5:30 a.m. It looked like a lot of 5K runners opted to pick up on Saturday morning for the 9 a.m. race. (Photo credit: Best Damn Race.)
Best Damn Race expo on Friday afternoon.
The expo was on Friday from noon to 6, and again on race day. There was a nice variety of goods and services available at the expo. It was fun to peruse the tents and talk to the vendors. Lots of deals! (Photo credit: This Old Runner.)

I'm a BibBoards Fan

Gotta say — I am very happy with my #BibBoards. I snapped on my bib at home, and never worried about it again.

It stayed in place in the 10K and again in the 5K race. It performed on race day exactly as promised! No pinching, poking, flapping or parachuting!

I'll definitely use these from now on. Plus, I have to tell you I did catch a couple of people smiling at my smiling sunglasses emoji when they looked at my bib!

What About the Challenge?

The Best Damn Race Safety Harbor courses have some rolling hills. Hills are hard to find in Florida, so it's a good test. Plus, who doesn't love to run downhill?

This challenge was a bit harder than the super flat course I ran in January. And, I'll admit I was a bit distracted at the start of the 10K. I buckled down about 3/4 of a mile in, and stayed on pace for the rest of the race.

I finished my this 15K Challenge 3 minutes slower than the SPB Classic in January. But, I'm happy with my races. These races are part of training for a PR at the First Watch Sarasota Half on March 18th. I felt strong for all 9 miles. That makes me optimistic because I have 6 weeks to be ready to run strong for 13 miles.
