How to Complete a Step Challenge When You're #SaferAtHome

4/12/2020

Did you sign up for the FitnessBank Step Challenge with Des Linden. Congrats, me too!

Did you plan to run outside every day for two months and rack up thousands and thousands of steps? Yeah, me too!

I'm lucky that I can still run outside, but the sidewalks and parks are crowded.

Running my usual routes involves lots maneuvers to stay a safe distance from the other walkers and runners. My favorite park just doesn't have enough sidewalk space for everyone right now.
That's why I started looking for new ways to get my steps in at home.

Updating My FitnessBank Step Challenge Plan

I don't have a treadmill or trainer bike, so it's just me and my feet. I have a staircase, but stair repeats get old REALLY FAST.

I decided — like almost everyone else harboring in place — to check YouTube for new workouts. After some trial and error, I added two new fitness workouts to my schedule. The beauty of these workouts is you make them as intense as you want.

Leslie Sansone's Walk at Home Workouts

Leslie Sansone's Walk at Home workouts reminded me of the old-school Jane Fonda workouts I did years ago after giving birth. Leslie guides viewers through a walk-in-place routine that includes working your arms and core.

Her YouTube Channel offers 10, 20, 30 and 45 minute workouts. Some are group workouts, while others are Leslie alone. I've done 3 different workouts this week, and loved them all. The 45-minute heart-healthy session was a sweat fest.

Leslie has a variety of walking workouts, including core, HIIT, weights, and bands. I add the 30-minute walking workout late in the day when I'm behind on my daily step total.

An added benefit for me is that Leslie is from Pittsburgh. Her voice sounds like my hometown.

Joanna Soh Official: 10,000 Indoor Step Challenge

My other new workout partner is Joanna Soh Official. She launched her 10,000 Daily Step Challenge in February, 2020. This workout raises your heart rate and uses every muscle.

Joanna leads you through a series of movements over 30-minutes. There's a 30-second clock in the corner for each movement which I found comforting. (Of course, I can do that move for 30 seconds!)

Joanna has workouts for cardio, abs, thighs, shoulders, and more. Plus, diet and meal prep tips.

I'm loving these new workouts. I plan on trying more from both ladies. They offer serious sweaty workouts + extra steps I need for my challenge!

If you have a favorite YouTube workout, share it with me on Instagram or Twitter. I'd love to know what you recommend.

Join Des' Spring Step Challenge: April 1 to May 31

Fitness Bank partnered with Des Linden for a Step Challenge so non-elite runners could workout (virtually) with Des Linden as she trained for her Boston Marathon.

The Boston Marathon, postponed until September 14th, isn't the only race that isn't happening. If you're an enthusiastic racer, your Spring races are cancelled or postponed, too.

You may be asking yourself, "now what?" and "How can you stay motivated?" I know I am.

Well, this step challenge is one way you can stay motivated without a race on your calendar. Keep reading to learn how to join.

Download the Free FitnessBank App

To track your miles and see how Des Linden trains, download the FitnessBank Step Tracker App
before April 1. The app syncs to your Garmin, FitBit, Apple Health or Google Fit tracker.

You don’t have to open a Fitness Bank account to participate in the Challenge or Groups. The fitness tracker app is 100% FREE.

The FREE FitnessBank Step Tracker App is available in the App Store and Google Play.

Join the Challenge

Once in the app, under FitnessBank Challenges to find DES' SPRING STEP CHALLENGE. (See graphic below.) Select the challenge and join!

You'll see your name listed with all the other members of the challenge group.

The challenge doesn't officially start until April 1st, so your steps tally won't show in the challenge until then.

Once the challenge begins, the FitnessBank app adds your steps to your total and ranks the challenge members.

Warm Up in Des' Running Club

You can warm up for the official challenge by joining Des' Running Club Group. You'll see there are plenty of people in there already, tracking their daily move goals.

The Running Club group can help you get familiar with FitnessBank App before the real challenge begins!

Start Tracking Your Steps: #StepWithDes

This is my second challenge with the FitnessBank App. I like it a lot. It syncs to my Apple Watch and tracks my movement all day, week, month. I don't have to download or upload any information, it's already there.

It's fun to check each day and to see where you are in the standings. Although you don't have to open a fitness account to participate, the app shows your current percentage rate each day.

There's a definite thrill when I drive up my APY rate because of my workouts.

If winning a prize makes you more active, check out your motivation below!

Now That You're Motivated, Get Moving!

I hope you'll agree Des' Spring Step Challenge is a good way to stay motivated during this odd time in the world.

You can track your steps inside or out — on a treadmill or a walk around your neighborhood. Do whatever feels best and safe to you.

Whatever you do, keep moving. There's no doubt that exercise relieves anxiety and depression. It makes us feel better both physically and mentally.

I'll see you at the starting line of Des' Spring Step Challenge on April 1. Good luck and stay safe!
