Today, I received my commemorative BocoGear trucker 🧢, race bib, and a fun ALIGHT sticker from the World Refugee Day 5K virtual run. On June 20, 2019 I ran VIRTUALLY with lots of people in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda 🌍 and around the world! 🌏🌎 It felt good to run for a reason. All the funds raised from the run support refugees through the American Refugee Committe (which is becoming ALIGHT) Alight provides health care, clean water and other life saving services. Thanks to Bib Rave, Represent Running, and Soul Focus Sports for letting me participate in this meaningful race. History and Purpose of Global Running Day
Global Running Day was known as National Running Day from 2009 to 2015. The event began in the US. It became Global Running Day on June 1, 2016. On that date, over 2.5 million people pledged to run more than 9.2 million miles. runners from 177 countries participated!
The sole purpose of the holiday is to encourage more people to be active. You can pledge to run here: https://globalrunningday.org/ (See the pledge form below.) Local, National, and International Events
Global Running Day is as informal or formal as you want. Run around your neighborhood. Run with a group. Run outside or on a treadmill at the gym. Whatever you do, embrace the spirit of the holiday and invite a young or new runner to join you.
If you can't meet up in person agree to tag each other on social. You never know who will see your posts and be inspired to run! I Have Two Global Running Days This Year
I'm celebrating global running on June 5th and again on June 20th which is World Refugee Day. Why two runs? I'm glad you asked.
This year is the first-ever VIRTUAL version of World Refugee Day 5k. Register and run the race when it's convenient for you. Run on the 5th, 20th, or any other day that works. I think the World Refugee Day 5K is a good fit for GLOBAL running day. It raises money to support refugees living in Uganda. It's a celebration of running that literally helps change lives. The race is a unique way to stand up for refugees. Check out the video below to see last year's in person #WRD5K in Uganda.
The World Refugee Day 5k gathers over 1,000 runners in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda. It began 3 years ago as a way to provide a fun sports activity for the young refugees. It's a way for them to stay active and positive while dealing with the challenges of life in a refugee camp.
