I started Week Two of my Fall training schedule today. I'm focused on lots of hill repeats to build endurance. My 5K in Pennsylvania later this month will be a good benchmark. About 1.5 miles into my hill repeats, I spotted a curtain of rain headed my way. I ducked under an oak to wait out the water. Five minutes later, I was back at my hill repeats and the sun was shinning. Oh, Florida! My only regret was that I was so excited about breaking in a new pair of shoes, I didn't check the weather. Oh well, they'll dry. Besides, there's something wonderful about running in the rain, so I was happy. Finished with 3+ miles and a check mark on my training plan. Fall Racing PlansThis season, I'm going to say my goals out loud so I have witnesses and accountability. I won't go on and on about my miles and times, but I'll discuss motivation, nutrition, fuel, and most of all: GOALS! Goal RacesHalf Marathons are my jam this season! I'm warming up with shorter races that fit into my schedule. But come October, it's full-time pursuit of half mara PRs before 2019 ends.
My next post will describe how I'm going to get to those PRs. Until then, stay hydrated everyone. It's super hot and humid out there! Best wishes to my running friends who are training for the Chicago Marathon. It's brutal to be running double-digits in Florida right now! This week my countdown began for the First Watch Sarasota Half. It's 12 weeks away on Sunday, October 20, 2019. I warmed up last month, but now I'm in a focused training cycle. My half marathon PR has cobwebs all over it. So, I'm determined to improve my training and performance in hopes of a new personal record in Sarasota. Fall racing in Florida is a challenge because Summer heat and humidity are brutal. But I have a plan — proper fuel, hydration, nutrition, rest, recovery, and training. Stay tuned to follow my journey. I'll be back with more details on my training adventures and why this PR (and a few others) mean so much to me. In the meantime, scroll down to get a discount and join me at First Watch Sarasota Half Marathon & Relay. There's a 10K, too. A Few of My Favorite Things About This RaceRecently, someone asked me why I like to run the First Watch Sarasota Half Marathon & Relay. I return year after year because it's a beautiful course and well-run race. BTW, there's a 10K distance, too! Since we have plenty of time before race day (October 20, 2019) I thought I'd describe some of my favorite things about the race. I'll start with #1 and add the rest each month until race day. Here's my list:

The John Ringling Causeway BridgeAround here, bridges are the closest thing to a mountain or hillside. Florida is flat. A lot of our bridges don't have much elevation either, but the Ringling Bridge is a respectable challenge. It's 60 feet tall and .586 miles long. The bridge connects Sarasota to St Armands Key and Lido Key. Here are some images that show why I enjoy running the bridge not once, but twice in the first few miles of the race.
