I'll write a separate review of the expo and race before the end of the week. I have a funny story to share about finish line photos. But for today, I'll post the final pages of my sketchbook and training log. It's hard for me to believe it's over already! I plan to incorporate more sketchbook journaling in my training logs. The commitment to do both helped me train better. Disclaimer: I received a free Hot Chocolate 15K race entry as a BibRave Pro. Week 12: Race WeekIt seemed right to count down the final days during race week with individual cups of hot chocolate. I took two rest days and ran easy runs the rest of the week. Holiday-Themed SketchesIf you're going to keep a training sketchbook, I have to say the last few months of the year offer plenty of fun things to sketch. I began training and sketching in late September, so my journal covered everything from Fall to Halloween to Thanksgiving to Christmas. Final Shoe Tracking ResultsThis tracker helped me pay attention to rotating my shoes. I'm kinda thrilled that I KNOW I wore each pair an equal amount of miles. And yes, I'm still in love with Puma Deviate Nitros! Final Weekly Mileage LogMy weekly mileage increased a bit each week for 6 weeks. I cutback in week 7, then built again each week through Week 10. Week 11 was respectable; Week 12 included extra rest. All-in-all, the training cycle went well. It began as training for a 15K. I switched to a 5K in week 11 due to other obligations on race day. (The shorter distance worked out well for me since it was warm and humid on race morning.) Training included the Boley Jingle Bell Run in downtown St. Pete this past Wednesday. It was a fun way to get the holiday season started. Below you'll find my training sketchbook pages from both Week 10 and Week 11. There are definite holiday cartoon vibes going on in my sketches. I was inspired by the inflatables going up in the neighborhood! I'll be back soon with details on the race expo on Saturday and Sunday's actual event. A Gratitude Attitude for NovemberI decided to illustrate some blessings this week. Here are just a few:
Weekly Mileage PageWhen I began this sketchbook, I promised myself I would be okay with mistakes. It's harder than I imagined, but there isn't enough time to redo pages with mistakes. Which is why there are extra red blobs on my mileage page this week. I'm disappointed with the wreath. Next time I'll draw one with more grapevines forming the circle. I like the leaves on this, but overall the page is "meh" to me. Festival FunWe wandered into a neighborhood church festival on Friday night and BAM! We were hit with all kinds of nostalgia. It was fun to see the rides, hear the screams, and smell the funnel cake and popcorn. I took a ton of photos and posted them on Instagram the other day. Below, is one of my favorite images remade in watercolor. I watched this little guy make his way to the snack shack. His face was lit up by all the bright lights advertising popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones. I may have been smiling as wide as he was when he got his multi-colored cotton candy. Register Now! I finished the week with a 9.4 mile run on Sunday. It was hard, but incredibly satisfying. The training program I'm using is kind to my old runner body, but after 4 weeks things are getting serious. TBH, I'm loving the workouts. The humidity returned at the end of the week, but that's okay. The UV rays are down and Sunday was overcast. I love running on overcast days — almost as much as rainy days. On the watercolor front, I focused on vignettes I see on my runs: a butterfly garden on a median, spooky creatures, and a lovely Secret Garden door in an alley. I feel like my sketches are looser this week — which is good. I love how relaxing the sketching and painting is. I get lost in the painting. So. Much. Fun. Onward we go with more miles and sketchbooking. Keep scrolling if you'd like to see how my Week 4 pages look. How Week 4 Sketching StartedHalloween season has been a big help for my sketch inspirations. This week, I practiced light washes. I enjoyed figuring out how to paint a hairy spider, too. I'm enjoying the parallel progress of working on my running and painting. Week 4 Ended with 24.41 MilesRoadside Butterfly GardenI'm an avid butterfly gardener. I'm also a butterfly garden appreciator. I always admire and enjoy the plants and care a local homeowner extends to the public property next to the road. Right now everyone gets to enjoy vibrant orange daisies and fluttering monarchs. (The pumpkin bucket represents the hundreds of pumpkins hanging from all the trees right now.) Creepy CreaturesThe inflatables are everywhere this week. Saturday night was the Haunted Hike in our hood, so we got to see all the creatures lit up in the dark. It was fun. I painted this guy because he's always fully inflated. I have no idea who or what he is, but he's on the job day and night. There are purple flashing lights at night. The Secret Garden Door in the AlleyThis door is in an alley where I sometimes run. I often forget which one. But, I'm so happy to see it each time I find it again. I imagine there is a beautiful secret garden on the other side of the door and wall. It's one of the prettiest alley entrances I've seen. This quick sketch doesn't do it justice; it does remind me how much I like it. I wish all alley barriers were this nice. Weekly Mileage and Shoe TrackerThis week's mileage came in at 24.41. I have 91+ miles logged on my two pairs of Puma Deviate Nitros. Time for a Rest Day on Monday! Register and Run the Tampa Hot Chocolate 15K / 5KDon't forget!
