Do You Pace Yourself in a Half Marathon? The last thing I consider before a race is whether I want to run with a pacer or on my own. My decision depends on how well I trained and if I'm running with a friend. Most of the time, I find myself using the pacers for motivation and information even if I don't formally join a group. (Pace groups are casual — join or don't, no big deal.) I've run alone with a pacer and I've run in large groups. Sometimes I jump in and out of groups. I start with a group, then move ahead. Or, I join a group and fall behind. Sometimes I get an extra push by deciding a group behind me will not catch me. Pace groups may seem intimidating at first, but they're a fantastic tool. Pacers keep you engaged in conversation. They offer coaching tips. They keep you motivated throughout a race. You meet new people and share the race experience. Races provide pacers to make the event better for participants. Disclaimer: I'm promoting Key West Half and 5K as a BibRave Pro.
