Do You Pace Yourself in a Half Marathon? The last thing I consider before a race is whether I want to run with a pacer or on my own. My decision depends on how well I trained and if I'm running with a friend. Most of the time, I find myself using the pacers for motivation and information even if I don't formally join a group. (Pace groups are casual — join or don't, no big deal.) I've run alone with a pacer and I've run in large groups. Sometimes I jump in and out of groups. I start with a group, then move ahead. Or, I join a group and fall behind. Sometimes I get an extra push by deciding a group behind me will not catch me. Pace groups may seem intimidating at first, but they're a fantastic tool. Pacers keep you engaged in conversation. They offer coaching tips. They keep you motivated throughout a race. You meet new people and share the race experience. Races provide pacers to make the event better for participants. Disclaimer: I'm promoting Key West Half and 5K as a BibRave Pro. What is Obstacle Course Racing?Have you noticed obstacle course racing and mud races happening more often? It's true. These events have grown every year since they first appeared. Obstacle course racing (OCR) ranges from family friendly to ultra competitive challenges. OCR participants race on foot while conquering various obstacles. The physical challenges include climbing walls, swinging across cold water, crawling under barbed wire, leaping over trenches and fire. Each challenge tests strength, speed, endurance, mobility, and more. The course distances vary from one mile to marathon. Some combine trail and road running. What Does a Rugged Maniac Event Look Like?Rugged Maniac obstacle course races (OCR) began in 2010 as Rugged Races. Two former lawyers, Brad Scudder and Rob Dickens, staged their first race in October, 2010. In 2014, they did a deal with Mark Cuban on ABC's Shark Tank. In just a couple of years, the race expanded to 24 US cities and Canada as the Rugged Maniac. Today you can choose from 30 Rugged Maniac events across the continent. Rugged Maniac features over 25 obstacles on a 5K course. There are 6 new obstacles in 2019. The event is family-friendly. It caters to participants at all fitmness levels. Before, during and after the race, everyone enjoys an all day festival. There's a mechanical bull to ride, bounce houses, beer, food, and exhibition booths. A few photos from the 2018 Dade City Rugged Maniac. Race Day Festival and Post Race PartyThe festival starts at 8 a.m. with a DJ on the main stage. There are plenty of activities and games: dance parties, pull-up contests, stein-hoisting and pie-eating competitions. Take a spin on the mechanical bull or play corn hole. Enjoy some food, a beer, and visit the sponsor displays for freebies.

Windy Weather Delayed the Races for 2+ HoursTwo big weather fronts threatened the Key West Half and 5K on Sunday morning. Race officials delayed the race to keep everyone safe. After 2+ hours, the race started as planned. Everyone I've seen or heard from said it was a fun event. Great tour around the island, musical street party, happy volunteers, and blingy bling. This year's medals were a mermaid for the half marathoners and a cute-as-ever 5K medal. Disclaimer: I'm promoting Key West Half and 5K as part of being a BibRave Pro.
