Week 7: Hot Chocolate 15K Training and Watercolor Sketchbooking

11/15/2021

Find links to more #HC15K sketchbook pages here

Week 7 of training for the Tampa Hot Chocolate 15K is complete! Five more weeks until race day (December 19) on Tampa's beautiful downtown waterfront.

I ran fewer miles this week, but did harder workouts. I'm feeling good and making sure to get plenty of sleep for recovery between workouts.

Keep scrolling for this week's watercolor sketches, plus a promo code for free Hot Chocolate race SWAG when you register to run the #HotChocolate 15K or 5K race!

A Gratitude Attitude for November

I decided to illustrate some blessings this week. Here are just a few:
  • Fall Flowers
  • Being a BibRave Pro
  • Turquoise Watercolor Paint
  • The Starting Line for Hot Chocolate 15K in Tampa
Picture
I'm thankful for many things, include race starting lines, BibRave, Fall Flowers and my new Turquoise tube of watercolor! (Image: ThisOldRunner)

Weekly Mileage Page

When I began this sketchbook, I promised myself I would be okay with mistakes. It's harder than I imagined, but there isn't enough time to redo pages with mistakes. Which is why there are extra red blobs on my mileage page this week.

I'm disappointed with the wreath. Next time I'll draw one with more grapevines forming the circle. I like the leaves on this, but overall the page is "meh" to me.

Sketchbooks are for learning, experimenting and practice. This is such a practice page. (Image: ThisOldRunner)

Festival Fun

We wandered into a neighborhood church festival on Friday night and BAM! We were hit with all kinds of nostalgia. It was fun to see the rides, hear the screams, and smell the funnel cake and popcorn.

I took a ton of photos and posted them on Instagram the other day. Below, is one of my favorite images remade in watercolor.

I watched this little guy make his way to the snack shack. His face was lit up by all the bright lights advertising popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones.

I may have been smiling as wide as he was when he got his multi-colored cotton candy.

It was fun to be under the night skies in the middle of a rambunctious Fall festival. All the sights and sounds were so much fun! (Image: ThisOldRunner)

Week Five of training for the Hot Chocolate 15K/5K in Tampa is done!

This week was a fun fit for my Hot Chocolate Training Journal. There were 3 holidays to sketch and paint: National Pumpkin Day, National Chocolate Day and Halloween.

Keep reading to see my painting and running progress.

Week 5: How It Started

Picture
The weekly layout was busy this week. That was good for sketching and painting practice.
  • Monday: I found a broken 45 RPM adapter disc on the ground.  That took me back to the 70s and my little blue turntable.
  • Tuesday was National Pumpkin Day. Green ones this time.
Picture
Turntable adapter for 45 RPM.
  • Wednesday: Opening day of Best Damn Race registration for 2022 Safety Harbor races.
  • Thursday: National Chocolate Day
  • Friday: Pumpkin Carving Party
  • Saturday: Admiring the Fall colors
  • Sunday: Halloween! I love the idea of "Boo Ya" on a Trick or Treat bag

Week 5: How It Ended

Picture
I managed to get in most of my miles this week. Sunday's long run was a little short, but overall I'm happy with my workouts. I'm still following my training program. It feels like I'm gaining strength and endurance.

As far as my watercolors — I really enjoyed the sketches and painting this week. My sketches get the ideas across, but I'm hopeful for more improvement. I'd love to get the perspective right more often. I keep reminding myself that just like running, artwork is a process.

I love watercolors as much as I love running. They're both peaceful, zen-like activities for me. I can't think of anything better than listening to music and getting lost in these endeavors.

Hot Chocolate 15K + National Chocolate Day

Picture
National Chocolate Day and a Hot Chocolate 15K are best friends! You'll find most of these chocolate goodies when you run a Hot Chocolate 15K or 5K.

Honestly, #HC15K hot chocolate is the best (BEST) I've ever tasted. You can sample hot chocolate at the expo before the race, and the finish line after the race. You also get chocolate, marshmallows and fondue in your finishers cup. Yum!

Pennsylvania Pumpkin Patch

I finished off the week with a rusty truck in a pumpkin patch.
Picture
I think this sketch could be a lot better — but it's a start, and a great memory from last October. The rusty spots turned out okay, but my perspective needs work.

Overall, I'm happy with my sketchbook training journal. It's a fun challenge and an effective way to track my progress for the Hot Chocolate 15K on December 19. Just 7 weeks until race day!

Next up — NOVEMBER and more intense race training!

Week 3: Hot Chocolate 15K Training and Watercolor Sketchbooking

10/18/2021

Picture
Week three of training for the Hot Chocolate 15K/5K in Tampa on Dec. 19 flew by! The countdown continues with running and sketching.

This week I was obsessed with fall colors. I had so much fun painting foliage, that I'm sure I'll do it again.

The spooky creatures continue to multiply — this week should be super scary since my neighborhood hosts a Haunted Hike this coming weekend.

Cooler temps, lower humidity and spooky decorations, are making running so much fun. Take a peek below for this week's sketches and mileage counts.

Happy running, everyone!

Watercolor sketch of activity in the park.
The lower humidity has been FANTASTIC! Lots of activity around the lake.
Fall foliage watercolor practice.
I loved painting fall foliage with watercolors. I grew up in Pittsburgh, and have lived in Florida for years. I still miss those fall colors on the mountains.
Watercolor sketch of Hot Chocolate Race finishers cup with cocoa, fondue and marshmallows.
Thinking about all the chocolate at the finish line made me want to sketch the finisher's mug.

This week's mileage total was 23.88 miles.
