Review of Science in Sports Energy Gels

7/12/2019

New Summer Fueling Options

Training over the Summer requires extra attention. You have to stay hydrated and fuel properly — on top of acclimating to the extreme heat.  If you don't, you can end up dehydrated with stomach and muscle cramps, nausea, and dizzy spells.

Here in Florida, the humidity often matches the temperature. As in — 90 degree temps and 90% humidity!

This Summer I'm trying Science in Sport (SiS) fuel. It comes in Isotonic Energy; Caffeine, and Electrolyte formulas.

Disclaimer: I’m promoting Science in Sport as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to find and write race reviews.

SiS Flavors I'm Testing

I've been testing the SiS gels in four flavors for about a month. My flavors include:
  • Apple (Isotonic)
  • Double Espresso (150 mg caffeine)
  • Lemon & Minto (Energy + Electrolyte)
  • Salted Strawberry (Energy + Electrolyte)

Keep It Cool

I follow a friend's suggestion and store my gels in the fridge. It's another way to tame the heat on a run. Most often, I eat my chilled gel before I leave the house for a run.

If I'm running long, I store a second cold gel in my pocket next to a small frozen water bottle.

Great Consistency

SiS gels aren't thick or sugary. Their ISOTONIC gels are designed to consume without water. The high water content makes it easy for your body to absorb the carbs fast = no upset stomach. The apple flavor I tested is an isotonic gel.

SiS does suggest you drink a little water with the electrolyte and caffeine formulas.

When I sip or drain the gel it goes down easy — even while running. I didn't need a water chaser to clear my throat.

That was true for me for the electrolyte and caffeine gels, too.

Another benefit is the SiS gels aren't sticky. I hate fighting to swallow a sticky, thick gel on the move.

Or, trying to get the stickiness off your hands, water bottle, and face during a race.

Fun Flavors

Every gel maker out there is working hard on flavors. Seriously, I'd probably eat a Smores-flavored gel even if I wasn't running.

SiS is at the top of their taste game. Every flavor I tried was good. But then, I love coffee, apples, lemons, and strawberries. Your results may vary based on your preferences.

Check the SiS website for all your flavor options. When I looked a couple of minutes ago there were PINEAPPLE and TUTTI-FRUITTI flavors!
Lemon and Strawberry Science in Sport gels.
To stay ahead of dehydration and get a boost, I consumed Lemon & Mint before I ran, then Salted Strawberry an hour into my run. (Photo credit: ThisOldRunner)
For yesterday's long-ish run I ate Lemon & Mint before I left home. An hour later, I took the Salted Strawberry gel.

I appreciated the electrolytes because it was a sweat-fest out there.

It's vital to stay safe during summer workouts by fueling early and often. That way, you won't experience dehydration, cramping or heat exhaustion. Respect the heat!

I've used SiS for lots of running, AND before, during, and after yard work. I'm super happy with the results.

Pouch Size

The SiS packets are larger than some other gels. (SiS gels measure 6" x 1.5") They fit in a fuel belt loop or pouch or pocket.

Carrying the gels wasn't an issue for me. I'd say the consistency is definitely worth it.

Two SiS gels fit into a fuel belt with my iphone. BTW, I love the double espresso flavor, but I don't recommend consuming two on the same workout. They're 150 mg of caffeine per pouch. (Photo credit: ThisOldRunner)
